Psychotherapy can be helpful for a range of psychological challenges. The foundation of any successful psychotherapy is the relationship between you and me. The space I will hold for you is empathetic and grounding; I want you to feel safe to share whatever you are struggling with.
Once the relationship is established, we will work together at a pace that feels comfortable for you. We will explore whatever it is you want to work on and in doing so we will work towards a future self that feels more resolved, grounded and confident.

Psychotherapy is for anyone who has something they would like to work on.
How long it takes is usually decided by the presenting issue. For more behavioural things like phobias, trichotillomania or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) it is usually more short-term, approximately 8-12 weeks. For things like relationship difficulties, depression or anxiety, it may be more open-ended.

Insomnia

The most effective (and evidence based) treatment for insomnia is called cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-i). Although it has one name, it is really more like a collection of interventions that all target different areas of insomnia. Generally speaking, I would categorise these different areas as: behavioural, cognitive and psychoeduction interventions.
By working through a distinct protocol we can target your insomnia and work towards a future which is no longer impacted by insomnia.

CBT-i is for anyone who has insomnia and wants to do something about it. There are a few exceptions: pregnancy, some mental health conditions and seizure disorders. If you have any of these conditions you can still have treatment for your insomnia, but we would use a different type of treatment called sleep compression therapy (SCT) which ameliorates the issue of sleep restriction. Get in touch and we can talk about which type of treatment is the best one for you.

Everything we discuss is completely confidential. Only in an exceptional circumstance –if I were to have concerns about your or someone else’s safety – would I consider breaking that confidentiality.

At this point I only offer online psychotherapy, however this is not a fixed position and should enough local interest arise I would be happy to offer in-person sessions in the Malmesbury area.

No, psychologists in the UK do not prescribe medication. GPs and psychiatrists are the medical professionals who prescribe and advise on medication.

The programme typically takes 6-8 weeks.

The first session is 90 minutes long to enable a thorough history to be taken, with subsequent appointments lasting 50 minutes.

There are no treatments for insomnia with as good an evidence base, or as good response rates. CBT-i is the gold standard treatment for long-term insomnia.

Yes, you can certainly do the treatment if you are taking sleeping pills. We can talk about this element of the puzzle in your first appointment and whether you would like to stop taking them over the long-term or not. I understand how difficult a part of the puzzle sleeping pills can become, as a result I am open to working with them in a way that makes you comfortable.
